Why We Use Cage-Free Eggs at Clara's Kitchen

Eggs show up in a lot of what we make — breakfast burritos, breakfast sandwiches, hand pies. They're one of those ingredients that's easy to overlook until you actually think about where they come from and how they were raised. We think about it, and it's why every egg that goes into a Clara's Kitchen product is cage-free.
What "Cage-Free" Actually Means
Cage-free means the hens that laid our eggs aren't confined to the small battery cages that have historically been standard in conventional egg production. Instead, they're able to move around, spread their wings, and engage in more natural behaviors within an open barn or facility environment.
It's not the same as "free-range" (which typically adds some form of outdoor access) or "pasture-raised" (which goes further still) — but it's a meaningful step up from caged production, and it's the standard we've chosen to hold ourselves to across our egg supply.
Why It Matters to Us
Animal welfare is part of our standards, not an afterthought. We ask a lot of our ingredients — that they taste great, hold up through freezing and reheating, and perform consistently at scale. But we also care about how they were produced before they ever reach our facility. Choosing cage-free eggs is one of the more direct ways we can make sure our supply chain reflects values we're comfortable standing behind.
It's what more of our customers expect. Food service and retail have shifted meaningfully toward cage-free in the past decade, and for good reason — more consumers want to know the ingredients in their food were produced responsibly. We'd rather lead on that than catch up to it.
Quality and welfare tend to move together. Hens in cage-free environments generally experience less stress-related illness and injury than those in conventional cage systems, which supports more consistent egg quality — one more piece of the puzzle when we're trying to deliver a product that tastes the same, every time.
A Small Line on the Label, A Real Decision Behind It
Nobody's going to build a whole breakfast around the fact that the eggs in it are cage-free. It's a quiet ingredient choice, and that's kind of the point — the products should just taste good. But when we're deciding what goes into a Clara's Kitchen burrito or sandwich, we don't only ask "does this work operationally." We ask whether it's something we're proud to put our name on, start to finish. Cage-free eggs are one of those decisions.
It's a small line on an ingredient list. For us, it's a real commitment behind it.
